Lois Marie Sommers, age 86, of Brownstown passed away peacefully early Friday morning, November 22, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Lois was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Sauers, where she was baptized in Christ on December 28, 1937, confirmed in faith on March 18, 1951, and united in holy marriage to her husband, Barry. She later became a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown.
Lois was known to all as a kind and classy lady. Her family was her greatest pride and joy, and her deep, unconditional love for them was evident in all she did. She especially treasured holiday gatherings and family vacations, creating memories that her entire family will always cherish. Lois took immense pride in working alongside her husband, as well as being a loving wife, mother, and nanny. She found joy in scenic drives with her husband, and she delighted in babysitting her five great-grandchildren. A proud and loyal Purdue fan, she also enjoyed shopping and watching a good movie in her spare time.
Born on December 13, 1937, at her home in Brownstown, Lois was the daughter of Amos and Katie (Duwe) Hackman, both of whom preceded her in death. On June 2, 1957, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Sauers, she married Barry E. Sommers, and he preceded her in death on December 5, 2014.
Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly (Gary) Jackson of Brownstown; one son, John B. (Chris) Sommers of Brownstown; three grandchildren: Brandy (Nicholas) Hampton of Seymour, Cliff Sommers of Brownstown, and Anna (Jonathon) Hochstedler of Brownstown; five great-grandchildren: Presley Hampton, Isaac Hampton, Dawson Hochstedler, Baryn Hochstedler, and Sophia Hochstedler; two brothers: William Hackman of Seymour, and Leon (Becky) Hackman of Brownstown; two sisters-in-laws: Mary Hackman of Seymour, and Joyce Hackman of Brownstown; and a great number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lois was also preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Louis F. and Maudie (Bedel) Sommers; four brothers: Eugene Hackman, Omer Hackman, Earl Hackman, and Hubert Hackman; three sisters-in-law: Lorna Hackman, Alvona Hackman, and Sandra Hackman; and one brother-in-law, William R. Sommers.
Funeral services for Lois Marie Sommers will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown, with Pastor Ryan Schneider officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown.
Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown.
Memorials may be given to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown, Riley Hospital for Children, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
