Charles Melvin Horton, age 81, of Norman, passed away on April 30, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Horton was a member of Mundell Christian Church, Heltonville. He received his Master's Degree in Math and Graphics from Indiana University and began teaching at Seymour High School in 1963, where he taught for 16 years. During the summer months each year of his teaching career, Mr. Horton constructed homes. He was also a farmer, raised beef cattle and was a member of the Jackson County Cattlemen's Association and Indiana Farm Bureau. Mr. Horton was a happy person, who enjoyed working and helping others. Born on January 24, 1937 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Campbell and Delcie Cummings Horton, both of whom preceded him in death. On July 21, 1960 in Bedford, he married Josephine Eggers and she survives in Norman. Survivors also include two brothers: John Horton of Batesville, and Tom (Grace) Horton of Norman; two sisters: Callie S. (Merrill) Butler of Brownsburg, and Mary Lou (Gary) Smith of Harrison, Ohio; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Horton was also preceded in death by one brother, Maurice Lee Horton; and one niece, Ruth Horton. Funeral services for Charles Melvin Horton will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Pastor John Wisely officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc. Interment will be at Mundell Cemetery.
