Donald ""Butch"" Abner, age 79, Bedford, passed away at 4:09 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at IU Health, Bedford. Born May 19, 1934, in Winchester, Ky., he was the son of Robert and Maude White Abner, both of whom preceded him in death. On Sept. 9, 1956, in Georgia, he married Mary E. Sermons, who preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 2013.Donald was of the Lutheran faith. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from Kieffer Paper Mill in Brownstown in 1997 as a forklift driver. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925 of Seymour. He loved fishing in the White River, hunting and going to flea markets and auctions. He also loved spending time with his two Yorkies, Missy and Harley. Walt and Donna ""Susie"" Bowman opened their home to Butch and Mary on their visits here from Georgia. Survivors include one son, Ronnie Abner, and friend, Jeannette Kessinger, Bedford; one brother, Dennis Abner, Seymour; one sister, Shirley Rollins, Seymour; and three grandchildren, Melanie Wagner, Clearspring, and Ronnie Abner Jr. and Jared Samuel Abner, both of Seymour. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Donnie ""Drope"" Abner; three brothers, Jake Abner, Robert ""Buster"" Abner and Charlie Abner; and four sisters, Oma Louise Napier, Agnes Urbain, Phyllis Bollen and Isabella Abner. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc., Brownstown, with Jame Ginter officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown, with military honors presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion 89, Disabled American Veterans 47 and Vietnam Veterans 7.Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to donor's choice of charity.
