Donald E. Hawkins, age 73, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at I.U. Health, Bedford.
Mr. Hawkins was of the Christian faith.
He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era in Korea from 1965 to 1968, where he received a Purple Heart. He also worked in security in charge of the canine at Crane Navel in Martin County for 20 years and then retired from the water treatment center at Crane Navel.
Mr. Hawkins enjoyed spending time with his family and loved being outdoors.
Born on January 19, 1946, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Grover Lee and Deloris Jean Prewitt Hawkins. His father preceded him in death and his mother survives in Bedford. On April 2, 1968, he married Nancy A. Lutes, and she survives in Bedford.
Survivors also include one brother, Rickey Lee (Sandra) Hawkins of Norman; sister-in-law, Lewann Burrell of Brownstown; brother-in-law, Gerald Lutes; 6 nephews: Scott Lutes, Kyle Lutes, Koty Hawkins, Aaron Hawkins, John Lutes, and Jordan Lutes; one niece, Brandi Brelage; and five great nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Dana Zaring; and one nephew, Blake Matthew Zaring.
Funeral services for Donald E. Hawkins will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Larry Carmichael officiating. Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.
Interment will be at Liberty Cemetery, Norman.
Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47 and Vietnam Vets7.
