Emma Jean (Smith) Hanner, age 81, of Norman, passed away at her residence on the family farm on Monday, July 24, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hanner attended Norman Community Church, and she had a strong faith. She was a 1960 graduate of Clearspring High School. Emma was employed as a teacher's assistant at the Medora Community School system and Brownstown Elementary School before her retirement. Emma adored and cherished her family. She loved spending time with them, and she especially loved attending her grandchildren's activities. Emma enjoyed listening to Gospel music, being out on her farm and tending to her cattle, working in her flower gardens, and watching basketball games and football games, especially Purdue and Kentucky. Born on March 19, 1942, in Lincoln County, Kentucky, Emma was the daughter of George and Orpha Pauline Stone Smith, both of whom preceded her in death. On November 12, 1960, at Kurtz Nazarene Church, she married Stephen Ellis Hanner, and he preceded her in death on January 14, 2018. Survivors include one son, Gregory Allen (Cheryl) Hanner of Norman; one daughter, Stephanie Ann (Clint) Brock of Brownstown; three grandchildren: Clinton (Erin) Hanner, Cole (Addison) Brock, and Carley Brock (Tucker O'Neill); one great-granddaughter, Madelynn Hanner; one brother, Carl Smith; two sisters: Mary Ann Steinberger and Glenda Faye Cooper; sisters-in-law, Mona Smith, Barbara Hanner, Esther Hanner, and Rita Hanner; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Jim Wilson. Emma was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lauren Hanner; a brother, Clyde Smith; brothers-in-law, Maynard Steinberger, Kenneth Hanner, Phillip Hanner, Everett Hanner, Dennis Hanner, and Loy Hanner; and sister-in-law, Mary Hanner. Funeral services for Emma Jean (Smith) Hanner will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Pastor Michell McIntyre officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc. and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Kurtz Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Don and Dana Myers Cancer Center. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the caring staff at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.
