Geneva "Genny" Katherine Baker, age 88, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2014 at the home of her daughter, Carole Sue Martinez-Fonts, in Tampa, Florida. She was a member of the Brownstown Baptist Church and was a housewife. She raised two daughters and was very proud of their accomplishments and was also very proud of her three grandchildren and her great-granddaugther. Genny grew up in Washington County, Indiana, and graduated from Salem High School. Her family owned property in Washington County, which is now Delaney Creek Park. Over the years, she was a member of the Brownstown Professional Women's Club and part owner of Baker's Used Cars. She enjoyed her friendships, especially her longtime friend, Helen Sovern. She liked socializing and never met a stranger, whether she was shopping in Seymour or Florida. She loved music and singing and instilled that love in her daughters. After a stay at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown, Genny spent the past 20 days in the Florida sunshine reminiscing with her daughter and enjoying her 4 year old great- granddaughter, Sophia. Born on February 24, 1926, in Black Snake, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Carlo and Ellen Saylor Hobbs, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Hobert H. Baker in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in August, 1945 and he preceded her in death on December 31, 2011. They were married 69 years. She is survived by two daughters; Carole Sue (Alberto) Martinez-Fonts of Tampa, Florida and Debra Ann Baker Schneider of Seymour, Indiana; three grandchildren, Susanna Catherine (Jason) Tarokh of Tampa, Florida, Christopher Martinez-Fonts of Chicago, Illinois, and Katherine Ellen Schneider of Cincinnati, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Carolina Tarokh of Tampa, Florida; and three sisters, Faye Drumm and Mary Brown both of Louisville, Kentucky, and Shirley Hobbs of Ontario, Canada. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was also preceded in death by four brothers, Paul Hobbs, Eli Hobbs, John Hobbs, and Nathaniel Hobbs; and one sister, Jeanetta Harris. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the Brownstown Baptist Church with Scott Erwin officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2014 at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the Brownstown Baptist Church. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown. Memorials may be given to Donor's Choice. The family wishes to thank all of the dear people of Brownstown, who showered Genny with acts of kindness, especially the staff at Hoosier Christian Village, and our Aunt Edna Baker.
