Mary Helen Bowling, age 71, Medora, passed away at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013, at her residence. Mary was a member of Midway Apostolic Church and was retired from Gerwin Shoe Factory and Spartan's in Brownstown. She lived her life serving her church and the Lord. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Born March 14, 1942, in Harlan, Ky., she was the daughter of Pearl and Sophia Davidson Brittain, both of whom preceded her in death. On Sept. 8, 1958, at Manchester, Ky., she married Cecil Bowling. He survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Kim (Jack) Burnette, Bedford, Verta (Tom) McComas, Trenton, Ohio, and Sophia Hedrick and friend, Tony Moore, Medora; a brother, Pearl Brittain Jr., Norman; three sisters, Minnie Belle (Jack) Petrey, Deridder, La., and Barbara (Edgar) Burns and Mae (Robert) Burns, both of Nicholsville, Ky.; 13 grandchildren, Jason Shouse, Ashley Haley, Josh Burnette, Dakotta Burnette, Aaron Wilkins, Kendra Wilkins, Alisha Hedrick Muncy, Ronnie Hedrick, Korey Hedrick, LouAnn Fuller, Thomas McComas, Cory Malcom and Tonya Malcom; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both parents; four sisters, Lavaghun Patrick, Athlene Smith, Martha Hughes and Wanda Moore; two brothers, Thaddeus and Harry Brittain; and a son-in-law, Ron Hedrick. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. W.L. Kaufman officiating. Burial will take place at White River Valley Cemetery, Medora. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the family.
