Monta Lee Charles, Sr.

Monta Lee Charles, Sr., age 76, of Seymour, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2020, at his home with his family by his side. Mr. Charles attended Kurtz Church of the Nazarene. Monta retired from Seymour Housewares after seven years of employment, and he also worked at Rose Acres for more than 25 years. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed canning food, fishing, hunting, gardening, mowing, working outside, visiting casinos, and buying lottery tickets. He also loved farm life. Born on December 26, 1943, he was the son of Thomas Nathan and Stella Mikels Charles, both of whom preceded him in death. On February 22, 1963, in Kurtz, he married Dinah K. Kirts, and she preceded him in death on January 16, 2007. Survivors include three sons: Monta Lee (Linda) Charles, Jr. of Seymour, John Matthew (Regina) Charles of North Vernon, and Michael David Charles of Laramie, Wyoming; two daughters: Nora Ann (James) Trapp of Seymour, and Candi Sue (Kenneth) Branaman of Medora; one brother, Rev. Thomas (Janet) Charles; four sisters: Betty (Norris) Smith, Myrtle Edwards, Patty (Nolan) Hanner, and Carol Nowland; sister-in-law, Audrey Charles; 21 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Mr. Charles was also preceded in death by two brothers: Ted Charles and Robert Charles; sister-in-law, Peggy Charles; and two brothers-in-law: Denver Edwards and Noble Nowland. Funeral services for Monta Lee Charles, Sr. will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2020, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.
