Stephen L. Springer, age 48, of Freetown, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Greenwood, Indiana, a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown. He retired from the U.S. Army after twenty-three years of service. He was currently employed with Tri-Star Engineering, Bedford, contracted to Bedford Crane Navel Base. He was a life member of the VFW in Greenwood and a member of the American Legion. He belonged to the Indiana Blue Chips. He was also an IHSAA official and certified in all sports and a varsity softball coach at Scottsburg High School. Born on November 4, 1965, in Indianapolis, Indiana, he was the son of Evan and Nicole Williams Springer. On October 11, 2003, he married Janet Hall in Brownstown, Indiana, and she survives. Survivors also include: one son, Sterling Springer of Brownstown; one daughter, Shelby Springer of Columbus, Indiana; three step-sons, Jerry (Tabatha) Fisher of Michigan, Christopher Hinton of Brownstown, and Nicholas Hinton of Richmond, Indiana; one brother, Shawn (Jennifer) Springer of Lafayette, Indiana; two sisters, Stacy (David) Griffin of Martinsville, Indiana, and Shannon (Bill) Glidden of Whiteland, Indiana. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with a memorial service to be held at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Patterson officiating. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Greenwood, Indiana. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements in Greenwood, Indiana, are being handled by Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service. Memorials may be given to the Wounded Warriors Project.
