Obituary

Carol Garlock, age 88, of Brownstown, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at her residence.

Carol attended Acme United Brethren Church, later known as Acme United Methodist Church, for many years.

Carol graduated from Freetown High School in 1955 and went on to serve five dedicated years in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). Following basic training and quartermaster school, she was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where she worked in the quartermaster division, later became a company clerk, and eventually served as acting first sergeant.

After earning an associate degree from Oakland City University in 1992, Carol went on to teach tax classes at the university. She then began doing income tax work in 1964. In 1972, when the attorney she worked for decided he could no longer handle the heavier seasonal volume of work, Carol established Robbins Tax Service. Many of his clients remained with her, and for more than 60 years, Carol provided tax services, including serving families across five generations.

Carol was dedicated to supporting the Brownstown Community Christmas Cheer and had a passion for sewing and crafts, especially embroidery and beadwork. She also loved genealogy, and although she wasn’t born locally, she took great pride in tracing her family history back to some of the earliest settlers of Jackson County.

Born on May 15, 1937, at her home in Ford County, Illinois, Carol was the daughter of Winfery and Minnie (Riedel) Garlock, both of whom preceded her in death.

Carol was also preceded in death by one sister, Anice.

A graveside service for Carol Garlock will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Acme Cemetery.

Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47, and Vietnam Vets 7.

Memorials may be given to Brownstown Community Christmas Cheer Fund or the Jackson County History Center.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the caring staff at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.
