Gary Lynn Cunningham

October 30, 1948 — December 17, 2025

Gary Lynn Cunningham, age 77, of Seymour, died on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Franciscan Health in Greenwood.

Mr. Cunningham was a life-time member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Dudleytown, where he was baptized in Christ on November 14, 1948, and confirmed in his faith on April 15, 1962.

Gary's career was marked by a variety of experiences, beginning at Sunderman's Sawmill. Those early years gave him the skills to later build the home he and his wife share today, from sawing the trees to planing the wood and constructing the house himself. He later spent many years at Cargill, worked at Schafstall Builders, and then at Kobelco Metal Powder, before retiring in 2018 from XPO Logistics (formerly Conway). He also served in the National Guard for six years.

Soccer was one of Gary's greatest passions. He dedicated countless hours and much of his talent to the Freeman Field soccer complex as a coach, referee, and player. Even at age 50, he was still playing the game he loved and proudly scored a goal or two. In addition to his passion for soccer, Gary also coached baseball during his sporting career.

Gary was a proud Indiana University alumnus and an avid I.U. fan, who loved supporting and cheering for IU sports. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed life's simple pleasures, including sharing beers in the garage with family and friends, road farming, and playing bridge.
Above all, Gary loved his family. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

Born on October 30, 1948, in Seymour, Gary was the son of Fred and Norma (Christopher) Cunningham, both of whom preceded him in death. On September 18, 1971, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Dudleytown, he married Marsha Fishburn, and she survives in Seymour.

Survivors also include two sons: Christopher Lynn Cunningham of Seymour, and Seth Patrick (Katie) Cunningham of Waldron; two daughters: Amanda Leigh (Chuck) Lowery of Vallonia, and Sara Elizabeth Cunningham of Reddington; seven grandchildren: Bailey Lykins, Jenna Lowery, Trent Lowery, Sophia Cunningham, Stella Cunningham, Isabella Cunningham, and Olivia Cunningham; two brothers: David (Kathy) Cunningham of Brownstown, and Lee (Barb) Cunningham of Crothersville; three sisters: Carolyn (Denver) Klinge of Crothersville, Joyce (Steve) VonDielingen of Seymour, and Linda (Dennis) VonDielingen of Seymour; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Sherri Fishburn; and several nieces and nephews.
