Obituary

Gertrude “Gertie” Eunice Schepman, age 94, of Seymour, passed away early Sunday morning, April 19, 2026, at Autumn Trace, Seymour.

Mrs. Schepman was a devoted member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers, where she actively participated in the Ladies Aid group and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.

Gertie was a dedicated farm wife, who worked alongside her late husband, Bill, on a farm that had been passed down through seven generations. Gertie took great pride in raising chickens. In addition to her work on the farm, she was employed for several years at the telephone company and at Nolting’s IGA, and she was an active member of Sauers Home Economics Club.

Family was of the utmost importance to Gertie. She was deeply loved by her family, and she cherished every moment spent with them, especially with her grandchildren. Gertie loved working with her flowers, gardening, cleaning, cooking, and baking pies. She was also an avid reader. After her husband’s retirement in 1975, Gertie and Bill spent many winters in Florida with friends until 2024.

Born on May 2, 1931, in Trivandrum, India, Gertie was the daughter of Pastor Alvin and Agnes (Loesch) Mueller, both of whom preceded her in death. On August 20, 1950, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers, Gertrude’s father officiated her marriage to Willard “Bill” Schepman. Bill preceded her in death on March 25, 2025.

Survivors include four sons: Daniel (Dorothy) Schepman of Crothersville, Richard (Kris) Schepman of Crothersville, Michael (Darlene) Schepman of Brownstown, and Rev. Timothy (Robyn) Schepman of Long Beach, California; grandchildren: Jon Schepman, Sherida (Steve) Newmister, Brent (Shelby) Schepman, Drew (Lindsey) Schepman, Angie Schepman, Stacie Schepman, Eric (fiancé Sunitha) Schepman, Alex (Annaka) Schepman, Kourtney (Tom) Dodson, Janel (Chris) Hammond, Mackenzie Schepman, Crista Lanning, and Eric Hercamp; great-grandchildren: Logan (Brook) Barrett, Whitney Schepman, Spencer (Mary Ann) Newmister, Samantha (Seth) Bumbalough, Madeline Schepman (fiancé Dylan Wischmeier), Claire Schepman, Sam Schepman, Ben Schepman, Jake Schepman, Anna Schepman, Luke Schepman, Kade Schepman, Gertie Hobson, Avery Schepman, Katelyn Schepman, Henry Schepman, Harlan Schepman, Olivia Dodson, Clive Dodson, August Hammond, Esme Hammond, Kaylen Turmail, and Kinsley Hunt; and great-great grandchildren: Neely Bumbalough, Owen Bumbalough, and Camilla Barrett.

Mrs. Schepman was also preceded in death by two grandsons: Josh Schepman and Gregory Schepman; one great-grandson, Jonathan Schepman; three brothers: Raymond (Viv) Mueller, Kurt Mueller, and Sam Mueller; and two sisters: Ruthie (Don) Woodson and Martha (Jon) Mitchell.

Funeral services for Gerturde “Gertie” Eunice Schepman will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers, with Rev. Timothy Schepman and Rev. Craig Muhlbach officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers.

Interment will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers, or St. John’s Lutheran School, Sauers.
