Harold "Pete" Herman Engelau, age 76, of Seymour, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Sunday, August 24, 2025, at his family farm, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Engelau was a lifelong and devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers. He was baptized into Christ on February 27, 1949, and confirmed in his faith on June 2, 1963. Throughout his life, he served his church faithfully, including as a Trustee, and remained a dedicated member, worshiping alongside his wife and family.
To Pete, farming was never just work, it was a way of life and a reflection of who he was. From his early years working alongside his father to later years farming beside his sons, he carried on a proud family tradition rooted in faith, perseverance, and love for the land. The Engelau family was honored with the 150-Year Homestead Award, recognizing their long-standing commitment to farming in this community. Beyond the fields, Pete also enjoyed collecting antique tractors, something he was especially proud of.
Pete served in the United States National Guard for seven years, during which he formed and cherished many friendships.
Family was the heart of Pete's life. He especially loved being a grandfather, spoiling his grandchildren, supporting them in all they did, and treasuring every moment he spent with them. Some of Pete's most treasured memories were traveling with his family, especially their trips to the Dominican Republic. He and his wife also shared unforgettable adventures with dear friends, exploring all 50 states and even journeying to Germany.
Born on February 1, 1949, in Seymour, Pete was the son of Herman Henry and Malinda (Schepman) Engelau, both of whom preceded him in death. On March 4, 1972, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers, he married the love of his life, Wanda Rotert, and she survives in Seymour.
Survivors also include four sons: Edward (Erin) Engelau, Jason (Tracey) Engelau, Adam (Casey) Engelau, and Troy (Jenny) Engelau, all of Seymour; 12 grandchildren: Madison (Andy) Whiteside, Ella Engelau, Annie Engelau, Sophie Engelau, Melina Engelau, Kaelynn Engelau, Sam Engelau, Henry Engelau, Abe Engelau, Claire Engelau, Kennedy Engelau, and Landon Engelau; and one sister, Linda (Larry) Guinn of Seymour.
