Herbert “Herb” Leon Lane, age 77, of Medora, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Lane attended Brownstown Christian Church over the past several years.

Herb retired from Excel Tool in Seymour in 2018 after 47 years of service. He was a Vietnam veteran, who served with dedication in the United States Army.

Family was the center of Herb’s life. He loved his family deeply, and he especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Herb enjoyed making quilts, was a die-hard fan of college and professional sports, and was a dedicated member of VFW Post 1925 in Seymour.

Born on March 7,1949, in Seymour, Herb was the son of Herbert “Dick” Louis Lane and Dixie Jean (Dixon) Lane. His parents preceded him in death, and his stepmother, LaQuita Lane, survives in Medora. On November 23, 1967, in Medora, Herb married Wanda C. Guffey, and she also survives in Medora.

Survivors also include one son, Herbert “Leon” Lane, Jr. of Medora; one daughter, Julie Ann (Ronnie) Maxie of Seymour; one brother, David Lane of Radcliff, Kentucky; one sister, Donna Figg of Brownstown; one step-brother, Bob Persinger of Freetown; one step-sister, Wanda Stumbo of Russia; grandchildren: Justin (Alayna) Lane, Jonathon (Rae) Lane, Conner Lane, Logan Lane (Brittany Clark), and Tyler Abel (Bri England); and great-grandchildren: Forrest Lane, Janalynn Lane, Jase Lane, Kordt Lane, Raynor Lane, Dallyn Lane, Hunter Johnson, Shilah Johnson, Kascen Johnson, Keithe Clark, and Kendall Lane.

Mr. Lane was also preceded in death by one daughter, Angela L. Lane; one brother, Donald Lane; one sister, Beverly Ross; and one nephew, Scott Ross.

Funeral services for Herbert “Herb” Leon Lane will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Pastor Gary Bradley and Pastor Bob Persinger officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.

Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47, and Vietnam Vets 7.

Interment will follow at White River Valley Cemetery in Medora. The family invites relatives and friends to gather for a meal at the Medora Conservation Club following the burial.
