James Leonard Browning, age 82, of Brownstown, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. James was a retired life-time farmer. He bred and broke horses for many years, as he loved horses, and he also loved rodeos. After his retirement, he worked at Goecker Construction for some time. Mr. Browning was a charter member of the Spurs and Wheels Saddle Club, and he was a member of the Jackson County Fair Board for more than 50 years. He was involved with the 4-H Horse and Pony Club, enjoyed tomahawk and knife throwing, and he had the talent of building anything he wanted. Born on January 5, 1941, in Seymour, James was the son of Leonard J. "Nute" and Edith (Lewis) Browning, both of whom preceded him in death. On May 1, 1982, on horseback at his farm, "The Browning Place", he married Pamela Sue (Fox) Wingler, and she survives in Brownstown. Survivors also include two sons: Jeffery Len Browning of Brownstown, and Bradley (Angela) Wingler of Brownstown; one daughter, Angel Wingler of Brownstown; four grandchildren: Desiree Burton of Hayden, Brooklyn Wingler of Brownstown, Allie Mae Wingler of Brownstown, and Brennan Wingler of Brownstown; one great-grandchild, Tate Deaton; two brothers-in-law: Dave Waggoner of Freetown, and Wilburn Chester Deaton; cousins: Jane Gardner, and Floyd (Carol) Browning; and several nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by one brother at birth, Jackie Browning; two sisters: Phyllis Ping and Sharon Waggoner; one brother-in-law, Loren Ping; and cousins: Don Gardner, Wilma Frische, and John Frische. Private family funeral services for James Leonard Browning will be conducted on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown.
