John D. Sprenger, age 94, of Seymour, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Covered Bridge Health Campus, Seymour, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Sprenger was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour.
John actively served in the United States Army, demonstrating his dedication and patriotism. After his military service, he held positions at Arvin Industries and Amoco Container. He later became a manager at Freeman Field Municipal Airport in Seymour for many years, from which he eventually retired.
John cherished spending time with his family, with a special devotion to his wife, Irene. His love also extended to his church family. Known for his passion for tinkering and fixing things, John had a knack for making repairs and solving problems. He was also an avid Notre Dame football fan.
Born on June 5, 1930, in Seymour, John was the son of John J. and Bernice A. (Pickerrell) Sprenger, both of whom preceded him in death. On January 7, 1956, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, he married Irene B. Nichalson, and she survives in Seymour.
Survivors also include one daughter, Karen J. Surface of Seymour; son-in-law, Scott Surface of Brownstown; and one nephew, Robert (Kathy) Combs of Jasper.
Besides his parents, John was also preceded in death by one son, Steve D. Sprenger; sister-in-law, Jane W. Henley; one nephew, David S. Combs; and in-laws: Francis "Sam" and Aldeen Nichalson.
Funeral services for John D. Sprenger will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour, with Father Dan Staublin officiating. A Rosary Service will be conducted at 9:45 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, and friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.
Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Seymour.
Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47, and Vietnam Vets 7.
Memorials may be given to St. Ambrose Catholic Church or St. Ambrose Catholic School.
