John Wesley Spurgeon, age 83, of Freetown, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at his residence.
Mr. Spurgeon was a member of the Brownstown United Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was also a retired farmer. Mr. Spurgeon was also a member of the National Guard, Spurs and Wheels Saddle Club and Jackson County ASCS Board. From 1970 to 1993, he was a member of the Jackson County Fair Board, serving on the buildings, grounds and swine committees.
Born on March 19, 1934, he was the son of Earl and Nellie (Wheeler) Spurgeon, both of whom preceded him in death. On June 12, 1955, at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church, he married Maxine Jackson and she survives in Freetown.
Survivors also include one daughter, Linda Jo (Rick) Brown of Freetown; one brother, Ralph (Vivian) Spurgeon of Brownstown; four grandchildren: Crystal Dawn (Bryan) Mager of Freetown; Heather L. (Kyle) Williams of Brownstown; Jonathon Tabor of Brownstown, and Morgan Tabor of Freetown; and six great-grandchildren: Cody David Williams, Kaitlyn Grace Williams, Victoria Marie Gomez, Isabella Renae Gomez, Kendal Faye Mager and Nora Grace Mager.
In addition to both parents, he was also preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Ann Tabor, and one sister, Lorraine Browning.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2017 at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Kevin Stiles officiating. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc. and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown.
Memorials may be given to the Brownstown United Methodist Church.
