Jonathan Carter, age 79, of Brownstown, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Silver Oaks Health Campus, Columbus, surrounded by the love of his family.
Jonathan graduated from Troy University with a degree in History. He began his career as a carpenter and later dedicated many years of service to the people of Indiana as an investigator for the State of Indiana. He retired in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to public service.
He had a deep passion for music and especially enjoyed playing his acoustic guitar. Jonathan loved working on projects around the house and dedicated many years to coaching baseball, sharing his love for the game with his sons and countless young athletes throughout the years.
Born on December 15, 1946, in Seymour, Jonathan was the son of Travis and Margaret (Barkman) Carter, both of whom preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ellen LaShorne, on November 26, 1977, in Seymour, and she survives in Columbus. Together, they shared a devoted marriage spanning nearly five decades, building a life centered on family, faithfulness, and dedication to one another.
Jonathan is also survived by two sons: Ryan (Krystyna) Carter of Columbus, and Brett Carter of Brownstown; three cherished grandchildren: Kora Carter, Jayden Carter, and Jayce Carter, all of Columbus; two sisters: Norma (Bruce) Miller of Louisville, Kentucky, and Susan (Charles) Jeffers of Spring Hill, Florida; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Family was his greatest source of pride and joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Jonathan was also preceded in death by one brother, Travis “Benny” Carter; a beloved granddaughter, Olivia Carter; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dr. Paul and Marie LaShorne.
Jonathan will be remembered for his strength, kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family. He touched the lives of many through both his personal and professional life and leaves behind memories that will be treasured by all who knew him. Though he will be missed, his family finds comfort in the love he shared, the values he instilled, and the lasting impact he made throughout his life.
Funeral services for Jonathan Carter will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Pastor Tim Carter officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.
Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown.
Memorials may be given to Jackson County Humane Society or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
