Obituary

Joyce Ernestine (Stevens) Burbrink, age 90, of Seymour, passed away peacefully on the evening of Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Covered Bridge Health Campus, surrounded by her loving family.

Joyce was baptized in Christ at First Baptist Church in Seymour. On June 6, 1982, she was confirmed in faith and became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Seymour, where she was actively involved and previously served as the church’s Recording Secretary.

Joyce held various positions throughout her working career, including employment with JC Penney in the catalog department and H.O. Canfield Industries/Pantasote, where she retired after 24 years. She returned to the workforce part-time in sales at the Hampton Inn until the age of 80.

Family meant everything to Joyce. A devoted mother, she independently raised her four sons, a responsibility she embraced with remarkable strength, perseverance, and love. She treasured traveling with them during their younger years, and found joy in needlepoint, crocheting, and baking. Joyce was also deeply committed to her community, volunteering at the Visitor Center and actively participating in the American Business Women’s Association, where she was honored as Woman of the Year.

Born on September 27, 1935, in New Albany, Joyce was the daughter of Ernest and Ellen (Johnson) Stevens, both of whom preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons: Douglas (Tracy) Burbrink of Lanesville, Brian (Jeri) Burbrink of Seymour, and Tadd (Tressa) Burbrink of Seymour; and daughter- in-law Yolanda Burbrink of Indianapolis; eleven grandchildren: Erica Burbrink (Steve Cullingford), Elizabeth “Elissa” Burbrink, Elaina Burbrink, Brooke (Wes) Banet, Kristin Manning, Brianne (Alex) Minnich, Courtney (Neil) Holland, Makenzie (Dustin) O’Neal, Ashley (Symon) MacTavish, Matthew (Kristi) Burbrink, and Hannah Burbrink (Spencer Parish); 16 great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Jackie Stevens.

Joyce was also preceded in death by one son, Michael Burbrink; three brothers, Howard Stevens, Melvin “Gene” Stevens, and Elvin Stevens; and one sister, Sondra “Jerrine” Shrink, sisters-in-law Margaret Stevens and Mary Stevens and brother-in-law Mike Schrink.
