Obituary

R. Dean Kamman, age 86, of Columbus, passed away in the early morning hours on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Columbus Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

Dean was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Columbus, where he was baptized on June 9, 1940, and confirmed in Christ on April 11, 1954. He remained a faithful member throughout his life, actively serving with the Men’s Club and on various church committees.

At the center of Dean’s life was his family. The family farm served as a year-round gathering place where family, friends, and neighbors were always welcomed. He cherished his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and took great pride in following their lives and activities. He especially looked forward to and enjoyed the family’s annual Brown County trips, where the entire family all came together to create lasting memories.

Dean loved to travel with his wife, Karen, as well as with family and lifetime friends. Together, Dean and Karen spent many winters in Florida and traveled to all 50 states. He also treasured time spent with their card club friends.

Dean graduated from Columbus High School in 1958 and went on to attend Purdue University. He was employed at Arvin’s in Columbus for 18 years before pursuing his lifelong passion for farming, raising livestock and grain. He took great pride in the family farm and was especially proud to see his son and grandsons carry on the farming tradition. Outside of farming, Dean enjoyed tending to his garden, beekeeping, and working in his yard. He found great joy in sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. Dean also had a love for fishing and treasured every opportunity to cast a line with his sons, grandsons, and friends.

Dean was loved beyond measure by his wife, Karen; children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. His faith, devotion to family, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Born on May 14, 1940, in Columbus, Dean was the son of Roland William and Beulah Mae Wagner Kamman, both of whom preceded him in death. On June 5, 1960, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Columbus, he married Karen Jane Reinking, and she survives in Columbus.

Survivors include two sons: Doug (Paula) Kamman of Columbus, and Mike (Ty) Kamman of Columbus; one daughter, Jane (Mark) Nolting of Brownstown; ten grandchildren: Ashley (Kevan) Pence, Kole (Kathryn) Kamman, Kyle (Maggie) Kamman, Luke (Caitlin) Nolting, Kyley Pelley, Kelsey (Tyler) Thias, Karson (Julia) Kamman, Katy (Kyle) Mathena, Kenton Kamman, and Jennifer Schuyler; and 23 great-grandchildren: Tucker Pence, Crew Pence, Grady Pence, Alice Kamman, Lillian Kamman, Emma Kamman, Jackson Kamman, Brooks Kamman, Mackenzie Kamman, Beckett Nolting, Blair Nolting, Blake Nolting, Brewer Pelley, Graceyn Pelley, Meredith Thias, Monroe Thias, Madison Thias, Paul Kamman, Walter Kamman, Kipp Mathena, Knox Mathena, Madelyn Tapp, and Landon Tapp; and one sister-in-law, Marjorie Kamman.

Besides his parents, Dean was also preceded in death by one brother, Jerald V. Kamman.
