Stephen A. Goen, age 78, of Medora, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Franciscan Health, Greenwood, with his loving wife, Jane, by his side.
Mr. Goen was a faithful member of Clearspring Baptist Church, where he loved his church and cherished his church family dearly.
Stephen proudly served in the United States Army for 16½ years. During his military career, he was deployed to Vietnam and Germany and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Fort Polk, Louisiana. Throughout his service, his devoted wife remained by his side, traveling and making a home wherever his military duties took them.
Following his retirement from the U.S. Army, Stephen continued serving others as a Veterans’ Representative until his retirement in 2010.
Stephen enjoyed simple pleasures in life. He had a passion for reading books and watching Westerns, and he especially enjoyed spending time browsing local yard sales.
Born on December 28, 1947, in Seymour, Stephen was the son of Cletus Albert and Irene (Edwards) Goen, both of whom preceded him in death. On September 16, 1966, at Wray’s Christian Church, Stephen married Clara Jane Smith, and she survives in Medora. Stephen is also survived by his beloved dog, “Peaches,” who brought him great companionship and whom he loved and cared for dearly.
Mr. Goen was also preceded in death by two brothers: Richard Goen and Martin Douglas Goen.
Funeral services for Stephen A. Goen will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Clearspring Baptist Church with Pastor David Sawyers officiating.
