When someone you love passes away, even a short drive can feel like too much.

Your mind is full, your heart is heavy, and the last thing you need is one more thing to manage. That is why Spurgeon Funeral Home makes a simple promise to the families of Seymour: if it is easier for you, we will come to you.

Our funeral home is located on East Commerce Street in Brownstown, about 15 minutes west of Seymour on US 50. Yet for generations, our care has reached far beyond our own front doors. From the first phone call to the final goodbye, our team is ready to travel to Seymour so your family can stay close to home, close to one another, and close to the people who matter most.

Distance Should Never Add to Your Burden

Grief has a way of making ordinary tasks feel overwhelming. Getting in the car, finding a parking spot, and sitting in an unfamiliar room can all feel like obstacles when you are still absorbing the news of a loss. For some families, especially older spouses, those without reliable transportation, or relatives caring for young children, traveling for arrangements simply is not practical.

We believe your energy should go toward your family, not toward logistics. When you call us, one of our funeral directors will ask what works best for you. If you would rather meet in your Seymour living room, at a relative's home, or another place where you feel comfortable, we will be there. Our role is to walk alongside you, and sometimes that means walking right up to your front door.

When a Loss Happens in Seymour, We Respond Right Away

A death can happen at any hour. Whether your loved one passes at home, at Schneck Medical Center, or at a care facility in Seymour, our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

If the death was unexpected and your loved one was not under hospice care, the first step is to call 911. Once the proper authorities have been notified, or if your loved one was receiving hospice care, you can call us directly. We will come to Seymour, gently bring your loved one into our care, and explain what happens next in clear, simple terms.

Our Immediate Need page walks through these first steps, and our guide to what to do when a death occurs can help you feel more prepared during those first difficult hours.

There is no need to have every answer when you call. Just tell us what happened, where you are, and how we can help. We will take it from there.

Making Arrangements From the Comfort of Home

Once your loved one is in our care, the next step is planning a service that reflects the life they lived. Many families assume this conversation has to happen at the funeral home. It does not.

When we travel to Seymour for an arrangement meeting, we bring what you need to make thoughtful decisions. We can review burial and cremation options together, explain what each package includes, and talk through the details that will make the service feel personal. Sitting at your own kitchen table often makes it easier to share stories, look through family photos, and remember the little things that made your loved one who they were.

What to Have Ready for Our Visit

To help the conversation go smoothly, it can be useful to gather a few items before we arrive:

  • Your loved one's full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number
  • Names of parents, including a mother's maiden name
  • Military discharge papers, if your loved one served
  • A few favorite photos for a collage, video tribute, or memorial folder
  • Any notes about favorite hymns, scriptures, music, or hobbies

Do not worry if you cannot find everything right away. We are happy to help you track down what is missing and fill in the gaps together.

Planning Ahead Without Leaving Seymour

Our willingness to travel is not only for families facing a loss today. Many Seymour residents want to put their wishes in writing so their children and grandchildren will not have to guess later. Planning ahead is one of the kindest gifts you can give, and we make it easy to start.

You can begin on your own time with our online pre-planning form, or you can invite one of our funeral directors to sit down with you in Seymour. We will talk about your preferences for burial or cremation, the kind of service you would like, and any special touches that matter to you. There is never any pressure, only an honest conversation and clear answers.

Rooted in Jackson County, Connected to Seymour

Spurgeon Funeral Home was founded in Kurtz by T.A. Spurgeon almost 125 years ago and moved to Brownstown in 1944. In 2021, the Spurgeon family passed ownership to Luke and Caitlin Nolting, both lifelong residents of Jackson County.

Our connection to Seymour is personal. Luke graduated from Seymour High School, is an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Seymour, and serves on the board of the Schneck Medical Center Foundation. Funeral director Clint Hackman, who has been licensed since 2001, also serves full time with the Seymour Fire Department. When we drive into Seymour to meet with a family, we are not visiting a strange town. We are coming home to neighbors.

That sense of community shapes everything we do. We know the churches, the cemeteries, and the traditions that matter here, and we bring that understanding into every conversation.

What Families Can Expect From Us

Whether we meet in Seymour or at our Brownstown funeral home, you can count on the same steady care:

  • Clear explanations of every option, without confusing language
  • Respect for your faith, traditions, and budget
  • Patience to answer every question, as many times as you need
  • Support that continues after the service, including grief resources for your family

Every life is one of a kind, and every family deserves to be treated that way. Traveling to you is simply one more way we try to make a difficult time a little bit easier.
